A life sized bronze figure of a dancer was one of my early works. Diana was 70 years old at the time she modeled for me, and the work was imbued with her dignity and my respect for her. The same sentiments are echoed in one of my most recent works 'Remembering the Grace I Never Knew', in which I have taken discarded minutiae from an old woman's possessions and resurrected them with care and sensitivity to create a poignant reliquary.

I exhibited the sculpture of Diana alongside a tiny bronze figure of myself as a five-year-old girl. Looking to my past has been a recurring theme in my work, which often incorporates old family photographs and personal effects.

My exploration of the influences and constraints that help to form character is articulated through the precise combination of apparently disparate
elements, to create objects that are mysterious but subtly allusive.

My latest assemblages use found objects in an unexpected way, juxtaposing unlikely materials such as fire extinguishers and birds eggs against sensuous velvet. Ostensibly mundane materials and objects are handled with a reverence that imbues them with significance. The names of the works - Self Preservation - Safe Keeping - Archive - imply something intimate and yet to be explored.

Remembering The Grace I Never Knew

Grace was the elderly neighbour of a friend. I never met Grace but heard a lot about her, particularly when she was ill in hospital. When she died her family threw many of her possessions onto the beach and burnt them. I salvaged some pieces to incorporate into this reliquary.

Safe Keeping

An old wooden box contains an unexpected array of items. Quail's eggs nestle on dark blue velvet beside the sharp metal spikes of an old-fashioned flower holder. The lid of the box is lined with a section of a family tree, from which are suspended labels with photographic portraits and an old key.

Self Preservation

An old pyrene fire extinguisher is enclosed in a glass fronted mahogany box. It is cushioned in dark blue velvet, to which are attached luggage labels, some with images of keys. A key is suspended inside the box above the fire extinguisher.

Kismet

An old brass 'Kismet' lorry pump is framed over the timetable for the Kismet ferry on Long Island, New York. The tube for the pump leads in to a glazed compartment containing an old pocket watch and a collection of quail's eggs, nestling on blue velvet.

Self Preservation II

A Pyrene fire extinguisher is mounted in a glazed wooden box which is lined with a family tree. Layers of glass, surrounding and enclosing the fire extinguisher, are sandblasted with images of keys. Labels, with images of family portraits, are suspended between the layers of glass.

Tools of the Trade

Three Six Zero

Three Six Zero comprises a large bell jar in which is suspended an antique ship's lamp. The bell jar is sandblasted with imagery from a nautical chart. It sits on a porthole, covered in gold-leafed mussel shells, inset into a distressed three-legged table. Below the porthole a stone sphere is suspended over a disc of glass, sandblasted with a compass rose, which in turn sits on the lower shelf of the table.
