    Access

Access Statement: We intend for ESW to be as accessible as possible and have provided further information below in order to help you prepare for your visit. Please contact us if you would like to ask questions or tell us about your experience using ESW.

You can contact us by phone or email. We did a pilot of using the WelcoMe app during summer 2022 and would be interested to hear from our visitors if they think this is a useful service for ESW so we know whether to consider it in the future.

Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop has level access throughout.

There is a lift and disabled toilets at café and reception levels. Rolling access is via the cycle path and cafe, or through the main reception from Hawthornvale. ESW is comprised of two buildings, the main Bill Scott Sculpture Centre, which houses the workshops (Level 0), main reception, studios, offices and Research Space (Level 1); and the Creative Laboratories, which houses a project space, outside working space and event and exhibition areas. The cafe is in the centre of these two buildings.

Parking: There is one Blue Badge parking space in the ESW car park. The carpark located at Workshop level (0) and accessed from Hawthornvale. There is level access from the car park around the side of the building on a compacted gravel path (or on the adjoining cycle path) to Cafe MILK which is in the centre of our buildings.

Pavement Access: There are pavements on both sides of Hawthornvale, some parts are narrow and cars park on the south side of the street.

Main Entrance and Reception of Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop: The main front door (non-automatic), is on Hawthornvale at pavement level. It is attended by staff during opening hours (Tuesday to Saturday, 9.30am-5pm), and staff can assist with the door. There is an accessible height door bell if needed. For visitors using our workshops, studios, attending courses and events in the Research Space, this is the main entrance and where people sign in and out of the building.

Courtyard and Creative Laboratories: This low building is the location for many of our public events, exhibitions, courses, artist commissions and weekend drop in workshops, for example on open days and during our summer programme. It can be accessed directly from the cycle path or by using the steps down from Hawthornvale or rolling access from Hawthornvale, via ESW’s carpark at the east of the building. This is also where Cafe MILK is located.

    Toilets and Baby Changing Facilities:
There are toilets on Level 1 and Level 0, as well as beside the cafe and the Courtyard.
There are four accessible toilets, one located one Level 1, along the corridor from ESW’s street-level entrance; and the other at Level 0, beside Cafe MILK. The further two accessible toilets are in the corners of the Courtyard so are available to people working in the Outdoor Learning Studio and attending events and courses.
All our toilets are gender neutral.
The accessible toilets all have baby changing tables in them.

Lift and Ramps: There is a large lift between the three floors of the Bill Scott Sculpture Centre. The Creative Laboratories building has level access or ramps throughout.

Flooring: The interior floors are all painted, smooth concrete, the Courtyard and Outdoor Learning Studio floor is also concrete.

Sound: Some parts of ESW are quiet workspaces and others, for example the workshops, have high levels of sound (ear protection can be provided). Cafe MILK plays background music and can be noisy when there are lots of visitors.

Lighting: Light levels vary across the building but most spaces are lit by a mix of daylight and overhead bulb lighting.

Assistance Dogs: Are welcome at ESW.
