  Magazine 2010 Press Release

Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop’s 2010 festival show will provide a platform for the work of the three, exciting artists selected for our Production Awards. The exhibition will take the form of three solo shows, running back to back throughout the month of August and will showcase the diverse practices commissioned and supported by Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop. The three artists, Katie Orton, Paul Rooney and Kate V. Robertson have received an award, studio space, access to workshop facilities and staff support over a three month period to research and produce new work.

Katie Orton’s practice bridges the luxury gap between squalor and opulence, between superficiality and a search for meaning. She has an uncanny ability to bodge convincing illusions together from cardboard, lino, wallpaper and plastics, mixing seemingly insignificant materials and acute observations in an attempt to understand societal forces and methods of control.

Paul Rooney will be showing a new installation involving a felled tree and a projected text. The text will provide the voice of the tree, explaining in fervent terms how thoroughly it hated being a tree. The text will also tell of the tree's frustrated encounters with a friend, Franz, who brought the tree letters which it could not read. It is implied by the tree's voice from beyond that Franz was also the agent of the tree's now felled state.

For the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshops 2010 Production Award and exhibition, Kate V Robertson will create a fountain-esque sculpture, using materials that are becoming a reoccurring feature of her work – ink, paper, cement, bricks, etc. The piece will punctuate its environment with inky outbursts and spontaneous eruptions, giving the work a life and character of its own, with unpredictable results.
