£450,000 needed to build new Sculpture Centre

ESW’s mission is to become an international centre of excellence for sculpture which promotes artistic excellence by supporting innovation, experimentation and debate, and which ensures artists can contribute to our cultural, economic, social and educational environment.

In order to provide the ideal facilities for our activities ESW is planning to build new premises on our current site. Designed by award winning architects Sutherland Hussey, ESW’s new sculpture centre will provide vital new learning, research and project spaces, specialist workshops, apartments for visiting artists and up to 30 artist studios. The world class facilities and inspiring atmosphere will ensure ESW can benefit more than 300 artists and 7,000 public visitors and participants each year.

Fundraising Campaign

Thanks to our generous funders and supporters we have come a long way from our initial feasibility study in 1999. We have fantastic designs by Sutherland Hussey Architects, full planning permission and 90% of the £4.5 million budget in place.

Our challenge now is to raise the final £450,000 needed to fully fund the project. We are asking trusts, companies and individuals to help us reach are goal.

If you want to help ensure this unique and important development goes ahead please make a donation today or contact Lucy Brown for further information.

Why we need a new building

Over the years ESW has developed a well-equipped facility for the production of visual art and has simultaneously established a reputation for providing high quality education programmes and managing ambitious arts projects. However whilst our site offers an ideal setting for a sculpture centre our current premises – an old railway warehouse – were not designed for artistic or public use and severely limit the organizations obvious potential.

The demand for our services is increasing year on year. In 2009 ESW directly supported 497 artists and more than 4300 people took part in our public programme. We had to turn many more away due to the restrictions of our current building.

Become a Supporter

By making a donation towards the new sculpture centre you will help to ensure high calibre artists can produce innovative and ambitious work and contribute to Scotland’s cultural, economic, social and educational environment through our artistic and public programmes. We hope you will also share our pride in creating the UK’s first purpose-built public sculpture centre and what is set to become an international centre of excellence for contemporary sculpture.

Of course you will also benefit from exclusive opportunities to attend previews and special events where you can meet artists and purchase contemporary art, and be the first to hear about ESW talks, courses, workshops and exhibitions that inspire and benefit thousands of people each year.

There’s information on making a donation and becoming a sponsor below and you can keep up to date with fundraising progress and events by signing up for our free email newsletter.

For further details or to arrange a tour of the site and our current building where we have a model of the new sculpture centre on show please contact Lucy Brown, Development Officer on 0131 551 4190 or lucy@edinburghsculpture.org

Inside the new sculpture centre

Sutherland Hussey has worked closely with ESW to ensure the designs will meet the practical needs of a working arts facility whilst also creating a stimulating environment to support high level contemporary arts practice, partnership working and public engagement.

The Reception situated next to the main administration offices will provide a welcoming information point for all users & visitors.

A nearby social space will provide an informal area (with comfortable seating and an adjoining kitchen) where visitors can get refreshments, check the notice board for news and events, wait for activities to begin/end & meet others in a social & friendly environment.

A flexible workspace with moveable work-benches, sinks and storage, the Education Space will be used by artists on a pre-book or drop-in basis, and provide an ideal venue for courses and workshops.

The Project Space, an open-plan space ideal for larger scale & multimedia projects and group working for up to 30 people, will provide an area where users can work freely with a range of different materials, create larger scale artworks and exhibit their work to a wider audience. An adjoining door between the Learning & Project Space will allow the two rooms to be opened up to provide a larger working or event space.

A Research Centre, suited to individual or group research activities, will accommodate up to 12 individual users or offer a suitable venue for group activities such as talks, critiques and peer-led discussions. A separate meeting room will also support smaller training sessions and presentations.

6 mac work-stations, professional software and a range of digital & media equipment in the IT Suite will support research, training & documentation of projects.

The following areas will be primarily used by professional artists however a programme of talks and tours will provide opportunities for public visitors to view the facilities, meet the artists and find out about the projects in development:

Three workshops with specialist machinery & equipment for working in wood, metal & mixed media, and also a covered outdoor working area.

Up to 30 artist studios will provide year round affordable workspace for single or shared occupancy. Benefiting from good ventilation, internet access and natural light; the double-height studios will be equally suited to making artwork as to providing a quiet space for research, project development and meetings with clients. At least 50 per cent of studios will be made available for short, fixed term periods to maximise access for up-and-coming artists and recent graduates, and to accommodate visiting artists.

Two apartments (one single & one family occupancy) will ensure artist working across Scotland, the UK & internationally can access ESW’s facilities & opportunities and contribute to an inspiring public programme. The apartments will be used by selected artists during 2/3-month residencies and shorter 1-month ‘micro-residencies’. They will also be available to hire (at subsidized & commercial rates) by other visiting artists or local arts & education organizations.

Quotes from ESW Funders & Supporters

“Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop provides a superb range of facilities and services that benefit established artists, emerging artists and the wider public. I am extremely impressed by what is on offer and this will be significantly enhanced once the new development is completed.” Malcolm Chisholm MSP

“A national resource such as the one proposed will have huge advantages for the future of sculpture in Scotland. To have the possibility of working in custom built studios and workshops, with professional facilities and technical help available is a wonderful provision rarely available in the rest of Britain.” James Castle, Sculptor

“ESW and Trinity Academy have developed an excellent working relationship over the years and we are very excited by the potential to expand upon this successful collaboration once the new building is up and running. Pupils who have visited ESW in the past through the ‘Pavilions’ project really enjoyed seeing inside the workshop and meeting the artists, and the chance to take part in a course or workshop at ESW would be really popular.”
Roy Keil, Principal Teacher of Art and Design, Trinity Academy

“By meeting the practical and creative needs of emerging sculptors and other contemporary visual artists, and encouraging excellence, innovation and debate across all areas of artistic practice, ESW will help to establish the building blocks of a thriving arts industry at both a national and international level.”
Prof. Jake Harvey, Head of School of Sculpture, Edinburgh College of Art

“ESW’s new building will be a crucial new resource for social and cultural development in Leith. Despite the rapid development in the area, it will be one of just a few cultural and education facilities available for local residents and will undoubtedly benefit the area and the organisations already here. Situated next to a currently neglected cycle path near the shore, the development will also help to make the area feel safer and more welcoming for residents and visitors.”
Sandy Campbell, Chairman of Leith Festival Association

“Having seen first-hand the benefits of ESW’s work at Open Days and other events, I am sure the expanded on-site learning and community development programmes will benefit people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds in the wider community. Whether as a visitor to an exhibition or a participant in an education class, or by taking part in workshops and projects tailored to the specific needs of local organizations and community services, individuals and groups from throughout the Edinburgh area will have the opportunity to learn new practical and social skills, meet others in a friendly social environment, try something new and creatively address issues that affect them and their local area.” Mark Lazarowicz, MP

“The Trustees were impressed by Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop’s track-record in the areas of education and community working. They are delighted to support the plans for a new building, which will allow for a significant expansion of these programmes.” Duncan Munro, Director of The Robertson Trust

“The idea of sharing space, equipment and information seems a very simple and obvious one, but in reality there are very few places that set this idea into practice in such a professional way as ESW has done. By designing the new building around this productive working environment, ESW will create an inspiring and unique facility that will allow creativity and talent to flourish.” Barbara Beyer, London based artist

“The relationship between the College and the Workshop has grown over a number of years and has been mutually beneficial and greatly valued by the College. … As ESW re-builds this will provide opportunities to continue the relationship not only in terms of volume but also breadth, for the enlargement of the Workshop will offer additional facilities and of course facilitate further international links. There is no doubt that the uniqueness of the Workshop’s plans will lead to innovative collaborations to the benefit of art practice in Edinburgh, Scotland and further afield.” Ray Harris, Principal and Chief Executive, Edinburgh’s Telford College

“I think Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop is always worth keeping an eye on. I love the big scale bold statements made by many of the artists associated with it. The workshop seems to bustle with activity, nurturing artists and engaging with the public. The website is also a treat.” Jonathan Mills – Director, Edinburgh International Festival on his ‘Favourite Place’ from Crafts Council’s annual publication, Collection (2008)
