This wood carving course led by artist Birthe Jorgensen will introduce basic carving techniques for carving lime wood. The course is physical, challenging and fun and will encourage participants to discuss their ideas in relation to what this age old technique has to offer today.
The course will introduce you to:
- Historical and contemporary examples of wooden sculpture
- Different carving techniques
- Hand tools and accessories used for wood carving including advice on sharpening, maintenance and health and safety
In the last session participants will present and discuss their work with one another.

Included in the course price: materials, use of tools and 12 hours of self-directed learning to be used over the duration of the course.
Birthe Jorgensen graduated with a BA w. Hons. in sculpture from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art (2003), whereafter she worked as a Live Visual Artist in the interdisciplinary company Apocryphal Theatre in London (2005-11). In 2013 she received an MLitt in Sculpture from the Glasgow School of Art, where she worked as a lecturer in the Sculpture and Environmental Art department (2013-17). She has exhibited widely, and is currently a long term artist in residency with Glasgow Refugee Asylum and Migration Network (University of Glasgow). www.birthejorgensen.com
