Description
In this course, you’ll learn how to use and maintain carving tools while transforming a piece of local timber into a 3D carving. Along the way, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of wood as a living material, exploring the properties and characteristics of different species.
Every carving begins with a unique piece of wood, and participants are encouraged to bring a piece that resonates with them—whether it’s a branch, log, or even a piece of firewood. A selection of timber will also be available on-site.
The course includes:
- Information on wood types, grain, heartwood, sapwood, and sourcing, drying, and treatment processes
- Tips and tricks for thinking and carving in 3D
- A discussion of contemporary and ancient carving examples
- Guidance on tool maintenance and sharpening
This course is ideal for beginners and advanced carvers with an interest in trees, woodwork, and hands-on carving techniques.
While the course offers projects suited to your abilities, please note that it can be physically demanding. The nature of the work may result in blisters and sore muscles. To support this, we’ll incorporate optional warm-up exercises and varied exploration to maintain a mindful relationship with your body and ensure the experience stays fun, no matter the direction your carving takes.
