This course introduces you to the historic and contemporary use of slip-casting in industry and art before guiding you through the practical process of creating your own unique ceramic objects. 

In the first three weeks, you will learn how to look at and ‘lay up’ objects for mould making, as well as the mixing and pouring of plaster to create multiple piece moulds for use with ceramics The final three weeks will focus on working with Parian slip, learning how to pour, cast, refine, and prepare your pieces for firing. 

Course Structure
Week 1 – Introduction & First Mould

Please bring along a few objects that you think you might like to cast and work with.  

  • Overview of the process (plaster mould making, slip-casting, finishing, and firing) 
  • Demonstration of techniques 
  • Creating a simple one-piece plaster mould 
  • Discussion of participant objects and project feasibility

Weeks 2-3 – Mould Making 

  • Preparing objects for casting through ‘laying up’ in clay 
  • Mixing up and pouring plaster in sections to create multi-part moulds 

Weeks 4-6 – Slip-Casting & Finishing 

  • Taking casts from finished and dry moulds in Parian slip 
  • Cleaning, refining, and preparing casts for firing 

Finished pieces will be ready for collection two weeks after the course ends. 

Sessions will take place in the North Labs and occasionally in the Outdoor Learning Studio. 

About the Tutor: Méabh Breathnach  

Méabh Breathnach is a maker of both sculptural and functional objects. They use ceramics, metal and the body as tools, materials and sources of inspiration in the creation of their work exploring everyday objects and acts – how we as bodies interact with and undertake them, and the ways they might make us think, feel and connect to one another. Mouldmaking and slip-casting are integral to their practice and processes they delight in demystifying and sharing with others!
