Saturday 5 & 12 May 2018

This course is suitable for anyone that has previously participated in one of Jack’s workshops or has some experience of mould making, casting and forming. Over two Saturdays you will focus on further developing skills and approaches to mould making, casting, clay modelling, and collage.

Each section of the workshop will be themed and will work with different materials such as wax, concrete, plaster, clay, alginate, metal cold casting and jesmonite.

  • Total Recallwill introduce a set of quick-fire mould making and casting techniques using a selection of products, focusing on the use of collage with objects.
  • Mud Club will experiment with modelling and free forming using various types of clay, inspired by the historic California Clay Movement and new ideas around current clay practices
  • Pop Archaeology will look at material culture and popular culture.  We will construct a portable alginate mould making kit to use ‘in the field’. Followed by casting in a range of materials including wax.
  • Model Memory takes its inspiration from artist Mike Kelley’s project Educational Complex (1995). The project represents every school Mike Kelly attended and the house he grew up in, in the form of tabletop architectural models, omitting all the parts he has since forgotten. Participants will be asked to recall and reinvent a ‘site’ or ‘space’ from their own memory, casting an architectural 1:100 model/landscape in concrete.

Jack Cheetham predominantly explores why people attach importance to specific places and things through paraphernalia associated with certain lifestyles. These associations unfold through the playfulness of seductive aspects of certain materials, processes and techniques.

Jack graduated from the MFA at Glasgow School of Art in 2014. He has also studied Fine Art in London, Tel Aviv & Jerusalem. He has exhibited widely throughout the UK and internationally. He makes work in a range of sculptural processes, including casting, modelling and installation, often combining materials to create assemblages. He currently also works as a Tutor and Sculpture/Ceramics Technician at Glasgow School of Art.
