Ethical Policy

ETHICAL PROGRAMMING AND PARTNERSHIPS POLICY

Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop commits to uphold universal principles of human rights and international law, to refrain from doing or contributing to undue harm, and to ensure basic ethical standards.

Based on this:

  1. Programming: This institution will not include in its programming artists, cultural groups/bands/orchestras, or cultural products that are produced by entities that are verifiably complicit in, advocate for, or whitewash grave violations of international law (such as war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide), racism or racial violence.
  2. Sponsorship & Funding: This institution will not accept sponsorship/partnership or other forms of funding from individuals, corporations or other entities that are verifiably complicit in, advocating for, or whitewash grave violations of international law (such as war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide), racism or racial violence.

ESW Ethical Programming and Partnerships Procedures:

  • The time needed for team members involved in programming, partnerships, sponsorship and fundraising to keep their knowledge of ethical approaches current is recognised and will be built into planning and application timelines.
  • Ethical elements should be discussed, where relevant, with any new partners.
  • Where there is any doubt about a funder’s approach we will either consult with peer organisations and ESW Board and Members to be able to broaden our research or discontinue research and not apply (whichever is more feasible capacity wise).
  • If we are approached by a partner about a project which has been directly funded by a funder we would not work with under this Policy we will not work on that project.
  • Fundraising plans and new partnerships are raised within diary meetings and all team meetings and any team member can raise an ethical question for discussion.
  • Fundraising and sponsorship plans, where possible within increasingly short turn around periods, will be shared in advance with Board Members and submitted applications will be reported within Board Meetings.
  • Ethical approaches are considered within the governance and risk discussions within the Board.
  • If we make any mistakes under this Policy we will listen to feedback and quickly follow through on any new information; we will exit any projects as swiftly as possible in a way which does not adversely affect any participants and artists involved.
  • We will be active in sharing information and working from a perspective of support rather than hostility.
