This five-week course investigates sculpture through mark-making, collage and improvisation as starting points. Using marks on paper, printed and found images, text, textures and re-purposed materials, participants will move from 2D experimentation into 3D sculptural form. Working intuitively and experimentally, you’ll develop ideas through simple, modest materials while giving thoughtful attention to concept, context and narrative.

No prior knowledge or experience is required.

Description

Ideal for anyone new to contemporary sculpture or art-making.

We will begin by looking at examples of contemporary artists who work with seemingly simple palettes and processes, particularly those who incorporate collage, text and found imagery in their practice — including artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Barbara Kruger and Nnena Kalu.

Through discussion, collaboration and experimentation, participants will explore how marks, images and language can evolve into sculptural form. A simple range of materials will be provided, along with the tools required for building and manipulation. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own source materials.

The emphasis throughout the course is on exploration, play and the development of ideas.

Week One– Introduction to Contemporary & Conceptual Sculpture
An introduction to key ideas and artists in the field. We’ll begin making marks and experimenting with paper and card to explore shape and form.

Week Two – Text, Typography & Meaning
Exploring the power of words, slogans and language in art. Considering narrative, association and conceptual approaches within sculpture.

Week Three – Found Image & Collage

Working with found imagery, collage and visual mash-ups. Considering context, environment and audience while experimenting with image manipulation and structural building.

Week Four – Developing & Refining Ideas
Stretching ideas further; adding, editing and refining. An opportunity to add additional materials and objects; throw caution to the wind and work towards resolved sculptural forms.

Week Five – Exhibition & Preview
Bringing it all together. Participants will curate a small exhibition of their work and host a preview!

Sessions will take place in the North Labs and Outdoor Learning Studio.
