Leontios Toumpouris – Open Studio – 11 April 2019, 6-8pm
Leontios Toumpouris is a visual artist based in Glasgow. His practice explores alchemical discourse, body and matter correlations, language in different modes and painting. Through the interaction with matter, fiction and narrative his work results in site-responsive installations, text, sound and performance.
He was chosen for this residency following an open call and selection process in early 2018.
During his residency at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, Toumpouris will work to produce a series of ceramic sculptures and develop a mural. Clay of different types (Stoneware, Earthenware, Earthstone and Calcium Bentonite clay) and states (dry, grinded, bisque and high fired) will be employed to suggest a non-linear narrative that abstractly recounts processes of making, becoming and being.
You are invited to find out more about Leontios’ practice at an Open Studio event on Thursday 11 April, 6-8pm. Free Event, no need to book.
In 2016 Leontios Toumpouris graduated from The Glasgow School of Art’s MLitt Sculpture programme. Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Of Particular Images‘, Intermedia gallery, CCA, Glasgow (ended 10 February 2019) with an accompanying public display at Glasgow University’s Special Collections (until 15 March 2019); ‘Phyle’ at Custom Lane, Edinburgh, curated by Eoin Dara and ‘Suggestions and Encounters: Physical or Otherwise’, at The Telfer Gallery, Glasgow, curated by Seán Elder (both 2018). He has exhibited in group exhibitions including ‘Phase 2’, Drive Drive, Nicosia, CY (2018) and ‘Home of Multiple Occupancy’, Transmission Gallery, Glasgow, UK (2018). Toumpouris has been awarded grants by the Eaton Fund (2018), the Cultural Services of Cyprus’ Ministry of Education and Culture (2017), The Hope Scott Trust (2017) and AG Leventis Foundation (2015) amongst others.
