Opening Event: Friday 8 March 6-8 pm
Exhibition Runs: 8 March – 26 May 2024
Viewable 7 am – 7 pm Daily from the street.
Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop is excited to present STINKHORN and new public commission by Chris Coatham and Joel Davidson for the Hawthornvale Space.
For STINKHORN the artists present a magic realist semi-naturalistic tableau of a fantastical woodland scene. A cornucopia of animals, plants and fungi – populate the scene, realised through a combination of sculpted ceramics, cast silicone and found materials. The flora and fauna appear as if frozen in a kind of hallucinogenic museum display, juxtaposing the hand-made quality of sculpture with imagery that suggests a more pre-human state of being.
Chris Coatham & Joel Davidson
Chris Coatham and Joel Davidson studied together at Edinburgh College before developing divergent art practices. They first collaborated for their 2023 exhibition Frustrated Objects at Sett Studios in Leith.

Hawthornvale Mentorship Programme
This programme is aimed at emerging visual artists who have started to establish themselves post-college but need to move to the next level of their development. The criteria for selection also recognises that artists have other reasons that they are can be classified as emerging, due to time taken for caring, illness or other life events and commitments.
The Hawthornvale Exhibition Programme is conceived as an ongoing programme of temporary public artworks, that reaches a broad audience, providing the members of the public with an unexpected encounter with contemporary art.
This year’s programme has been generously supported by The Idlewild Trust
