Experimental Clay Portraiture Summer School with Duncan Robertson 2024

Dates  10-12 July 2024
Time 10am – 4pm

This three-day summer school will take an experimental approach to Clay Portraiture, inspired by the innovative and imaginative processes used by artists such as Eduardo Paolozzi who would have been 100 years old this year. You will start by working through different playful exercises with clay utilising your sense of touch to then produce a sculpture based on the head using collaging and carving techniques.

The emphasis of this course is on the process rather than a final outcome, in a supportive space for creative experimentation and development.

Over four weeks, this course we will take an experimental approach to working with different clays and slips to encourage outcomes like cracks, warping and explosions- things we are often told to avoid when working with ceramics. Practising creative rule breaking we will get unexpected original results that can be manipulated into interesting shapes and textures. We will look deeply into the material itself and explore how we can take advantage of timings, mixing things up and pushing things to breaking point.

This course is suitable for both beginners and people who have worked with clay but perhaps not explored this side of it.
